A survey and several online workshops – open to members, partners, and all practitioners in related professions – will run throughout May

Update: Monday 1 June 2020

The LI Entry Standards Consultation has now concluded.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the online survey and the workshops. The Entry Standards steering group and the Education and Membership Committee will analyse and discuss the responses throughout the coming month.

Following these groups’ recommendations, we will revise the competency framework for approval by the Landscape Institute Board later this year. The aim is to publish a finalised competency framework and entry criteria for Technician and Chartered membership entry by the end of 2020, with phased implementation from 2021 onwards.

The Landscape Institute is developing a new Competency Framework.

As the professional body for the landscape sector, the LI must continually reflect the sector’s changing needs. It’s our role to help landscape practitioners remain trusted, relevant and successful, today and in the future.

As well as awarding professional recognition to landscape architects, the LI recognises the need to welcome more practitioners who work across the breadth of landscape fields. The new Competency Framework aims to reflect new and emerging areas of practice, helping us attract, include and support professionals from wider and more diverse backgrounds.

FAQ

I am a Chartered Member. Will I need to demonstrate competency against the Framework?

No. There will be no requirement for existing Chartered Members to demonstrate these competencies or to take any assessment.

However, the LI will be mapping future CPD events to the Competency Framework, and asking members to record CPD against the competencies.

I am currently on the LI Pathway to Chartership. How will the Competency Framework affect me?

Following the adoption of this framework in mid 2021, existing Pathway candidates will have at least two years to complete examinations under our existing entry standards as we transition to a new system of entry based on this emerging framework.

During the transition period, we will also be seeking existing Pathway candidates to help us trial any new entry requirements arising from this project.

I am a tutor on an LI accredited course. Will we need to map our courses to the Competency Framework?

The Framework sets out competencies for membership of the LI. Accredited courses provide the core knowledge and understanding needed to achieve these competencies.

There will be no immediate requirement for accredited course providers to make changes. In spring 2021, we intend to undertake a review of the accreditation process in close consultation with SCHOLA and with all accredited schools.

In time, the Competency Framework will replace the Elements and Areas of Practice document. At this stage, accredited courses will need to demonstrate their relevance to the Competencies as they currently do for this document. We will be discussing the timetable for these changes with SCHOLA and the accredited schools.

I am an examiner on the Pathway to Chartership. How will the Competency Framework affect me?

Following the adoption of this framework in mid 2021, existing Pathway candidates will have at least two years to complete examinations under our existing entry standards as we transition to a new system of entry based on this emerging framework.

During the transition period, we will also be seeking existing Pathway candidates and examiners to help us trial any new entry requirements arising from this project. Please get in touch if you would be interested in participating. (Training will of course be provided.)

I am a mentor on the Pathway to Chartership. How will the Competency Framework affect me?

Following the adoption of this framework in mid 2021, any candidate you are mentoring will have at least two years to complete examinations under our existing entry standards as we transition to a new system of entry based on this emerging framework.

During the transition period, we will also be seeking existing Pathway candidates to help us trial any new entry requirements arising from this project. If you are mentoring one of these candidates, we will provide training and support for you prior to these trials commencing.

  1. Is it possible for the survey monkey questions to be provided in a document and made available as it is a very comprehensive consultation document and would be much easier if one knew the questions and could them consider whilst absorbing the document, rather than having to go back and forth whilst in survey monkey.
    Many thanks

  2. Hi,
The workshops are focused by topic is useful however the latest Vista stated that members should only book onto the most relevant workshop. What about members that require an overview of, and see it necessary to feed into, all of these areas? Recorded workshops would be useful but not the same as attending live events. What is the difference between answering the survey questions and attending the workshops, in terms of influencing the emerging framework? Surely it would be useful for members to engage in open dialogue through the workshops before answering the survey? I also agree with Annie Coombs that it would be useful to have the questions in mind whilst reading the CF documents.
    Many thanks
