Churchman submits multi-level scheme for planning permission
Churchman Landscape Architect has submitted plans for a major public realm scheme for the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus.
The 5.5ha Green Heart project covers the site of the former 1950s library – now replaced with a new building by Associated Architects.
Churchman describes the scheme as a ‘multi-level movement strategy’, which uses ramped pathways and a new footbridge to aid flow around a series of interconnected spaces arranged along the axis of the Joseph Chamberlain memorial clock tower, or simply ‘Old Joe’, the tallest free-standing clock tower in the world.
‘Conceptually the scheme seeks to promote occupation, interaction and random encounter as a means of expanding the value of the educational landscape,’ said the architect.
