BDP have won a competition to masterplan the Zhengdong Transit Hub in Henan China, integrating a residential district with high-speed rail
Set up by the Zhengzhou city authorities, the competition challenged practices to take 300-hectares of land and design a district close to a busy high-speed rail. According to the competition brief, the space needed to allow for constant pedestrian movement, but also engender a sense of community.
The city sits on top of China’s most important transportation crossroads, servicing major rail routes between Beijing, Shanghai and Xian, with more than 200,000 passengers passing through the station every day. According to BDP, their masterplan is “constructed around a distinct sequence of pedestrian movements, which will help guide passengers through attractive landscape spaces to new retail, commercial, residential and cultural amenities”.
BDP’s objective was to develop the area into an attractive landscape made up of outside spaces and commercial premises, with the retail area within easy access of the railway station and Four Season Park, a major green space in the centre of the plan. Features of the design include a retail area in the form of a Winter Garden, which is not only weatherproof but also incorporates large amounts of natural light. The retail area’s spaces are carefully integrated with the park, which is also designed to be enjoyed at all times of the year.
BDP said: “Four Seasons Park also creates an attractive address for a number of towers located along its margins. The towers are staggered in plan and with a series of mid-rise blocks will create a balanced composition that helps to establish a hierarchy of pedestrian friendly streets and spaces.”
