City centre’s Broadmarsh area to receive major remodelling

Collin Street masterplan, with Nottingham castle to the left and Lace Market to the right

Townshend Landscape Architects has been appointed to join Leonard Design Architects in remodelling Nottingham’s Broadmarsh area along the southern edge of the city centre, a major regeneration project for the city

Central to the regeneration plans will be the pedestrianisation of Collin Street and the creation of new green spaces, as well as the redevelopment of the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre, main car park and bus station.

Regeneration is expected to increase visitor numbers by three million a year. The route through from the mainline railway station to the town centre will be enhanced, and more pedestrian and cycle-friendly pathways created east to the Nottingham Contemporary arts centre and the historic Lace Market, and west up to the castle.

Gary Alden, senior associate at Townshend, said: ‘This is a great opportunity for us to help transform a part of the city currently dominated by traffic and create a new public landscape for all to enjoy; to create a unique and special space that will improve connections for pedestrians, and enrich the city centre of Nottingham and its strong cultural heritage.’
