Barnsley and Netherlands share practice award

Stockton High Street wins urban design award

The £38m regeneration masterplan of Stockton High Street, County Durham, has won the Francis Tibbalds Public Sector Award at the Urban Design Group's National Urban Design Awards.

Stockton Borough Council's in-house design team has transformed 'the UK's widest high street' with transport zones at either end, a sociable central piazza and play fountains as a focus, and flexible spaces for a street market and outdoor entertainments. As a result, vacancy rates have fallen by 6% and it has hosted events and festivals. Also shortlisted were the Corporation of the City of London and Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The Practice Award was jointly won by IBI for its Barnsley town centre masterplan and BACA architects, nominated for its landscape work at Nijmegen, Netherlands, to cope with flooding.
