RIBA announces shortlist for University of Lancaster walkway redesign.

Shortlist announced for Lancaster University competition

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), acting on behalf of Lancaster University, has announced the shortlist for the design competition to rejuvenate the campus’s principal walkway, ‘the Spine’.

The Spine is a partially covered pedestrian walkway spanning the campus and was originally designed to provide pedestrians with a degree of protection from the weather.
The university was looking for ‘an innovative team to create an inspirational space where people learn, work, live and socialise’. The competition received an excellent response, says RIBA, and the shortlisted teams selected (in alphabetical order of the lead applicant, with collaborator in brackets) are: Gustafson Porter; Land Use Consultants (with Design Engine Architects); Rick Mather Architects (with Grant Associates); Shepheard Epstein Hunter (with landscape architect tf-LAB London); and White Arkitekter.
The shortlisted teams will be invited to present their proposals to a judging panel in September.
