A sculpture of a sleeping giant is set to be the centrepiece of a new park in south London, designed by Planet Earth
The Peckham Giant, carved by artist Friedel Buecking, is being installed this week and will lie at the heart of St Mary’s Frobisher Park, a new public space commissioned by the London Borough of Southwark.
The park is next to the Pioneer Centre, built in the 1930s and home of the Peckham Experiment, which pioneered healthy eating of home-grown fresh food, exercise and communal living for families.
The new park has a striking blue ceramic rainwater channel snaking through it, gradually descending to a reed filtration bed. This represents not only a sustainable water system, but also a feature unknown on this scale in London.
