Biographer Kate Colquhoun to deliver annual garden history group talk

Paxton lecture celebrates 150th anniversary

The Birkbeck Garden History Group's annual lecture will this year be given by biographer and author Kate Colquhoun on the subject of Sir Joseph Paxton, commemorating the 150th year of his death.

The title of Colquhoun's lecture is that of her 2009 biography A Thing in Disguise –
The Visionary Life of Joseph Paxton (Harper Collins, £12.99). For this talk she will focus on Paxton's role as gardener to the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth, their ambitions for the estate, and Paxton’s contributions to horticulture, the design of gardens, greenhouses, parks and park features.

The lecture takes place on 4 November at the Lumen United Reform Church Centre, 88 Tavistock Place, London WC1, at 6.30pm. Tickets are £10 for members, £12 for non-members, including a drink and refreshments after the lecture.
