New square will unite campus and community
Gustafson Porter + Bowman has been appointed to design a new public square for London Metropolitan University’s Holloway campus.
The Camden-based landscape architect will work with university students and staff as well as the local community to create public realm that enhances the aesthetic and sensory experience of the campus and aids orientation. It will also be used for events and exhibitions.
The scheme is part of a £125m redevelopment of the campus by the university to improve links with the local community and urban fabric.
Neil Porter, founding partner of Gustafson Porter + Bowman, said: ‘The intention is to unify the disparate collection of existing buildings by providing a new square that acts as the destination and heart of campus life. The design will need to respond to the redevelopment of the surrounding buildings to ensure that the square forms part of a forward-looking and buzzing educational facility.’
The new square is due for completion in 2019.
