The Landscape Institute’s recommendations on Green Infrastructure have made it into a guidance book issued by the British government to local flood authorities.

LI influences flooding policy

The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 requires the Secretary of State to provide information on how a local flood authority can aim to make a contribution to sustainable development.

In November 2010, Defra carried out a consultation on local flood authorities’ contribution to sustainable development.

The LI responded to this consultation in February 2011, advocating the use of green infrastructure as one way in which local flood authorities can effectively discharge their duties towards achieving sustainable development.

The LI suggested that its GI position statement be referred to as a source of guidance for local authorities. And this has been accepted in the final guidance issued by Defra.
