Delegates gather for ceremony recognising excellent green spaces.
The 2015 Hertfordshire Green Flag Awards ceremony took place on 13 August. Green Flag is the parks equivalent of Blue Flag beaches and Green Flag parks are inspected by Green Flag Award Judges and assessed against eight criteria.Behind the scenes in the lead up to the event there is an army of Green Flag Award Judges, including a number of LI members. 48 awards were given in Hertfordshire in 2015 and more than 1400 were awarded nationally.
The event, which is the largest Green Flag Awards ceremony in the UK, saw more than180 delegates gather, including parks representatives, elected members, Local Authority green space managers, friends groups and trade representatives. Speakers included Paul Todd of the Tidy Britain Group, who was presenting the awards; Tony Bradford of Hertfordshire Countryside Management Service; Kate Brown (HLF) and John O’Callaghan (Herts Sports Partnership).
Simon Odell, CMLI and Head of Technical and Professional Services at the Landscape Institute, gave the closing address. He emphasised the importance of collaboration across friends of parks groups and lobbying groups and highlighted the work of The Parks Alliance, and the LI’s support of this group, along with the Institute’s own continuing work promoting the benefits of green infrastructure.The Landscape Institute recognises the importance of the Green Flag initiative and can offer a professional home to green space managers.Read more about the Green Flag Awards and view award-winners on their website.
