LDA Design to masterplan Cambridge museums site
The New Museums Site is a significant part of the university’s city centre presence, and is located in the city’s core conservation area.
A development framework for the site includes ‘objectives that seek to develop a coordinated and phased masterplan for university departments moving in and those departing from the site to West Cambridge,’ says LDA. The masterplan is likely to include substantial demolition of buildings within the site, conversion and upgrading of existing historic buildings and the establishment of design briefs for new departmental and university facilities, as well as improvements to public realm and enhanced connections with the city.
The project represents a significant opportunity to establish a coordinated and sustainable plan for the New Museums Site, says LDA Design partner Alister Kratt, one that is ‘based on a vision that will provide a fresh identity for this part of the city and an improved public realm as well as an attractive setting for academic study’.
