It is with enormous sadness that the Landscape Institute has learned of the death of Her Majesty the Queen on 8 September 2022.

At 6.38pm on Thursday evening, the BBC announced that the Queen had died peacefully at Balmoral that afternoon. Her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, has become the new King and head of state.

The BBC wrote:

‘Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union.

‘Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

‘She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.’

Earlier in the day, BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond explained that most of us aren’t aware of the ‘enormous number’ of duties the Queen carried out.

‘We might see the State Opening of Parliament or we might see her at Remembrance Day, but day-to-day there are literally hours of state duties,’ Mr Dymond said.

At 96 years of age, the Queen was Britain’s longest-lived and longest-reigning monarch, and the longest-serving head of state in the world. Born in 1926, Her Majesty’s devotion to public service long predated her accession to the throne in 1952. Her unwavering sense of duty has been a constant for all of us, offering a source of stability across seven decades that have seen more change than any other period in human history.
