A new book, edited by Kathryn Moore PPLI, Anastasia Nikologianni, Alex Albans & Paul Cureton, investigates how landscape can reimagine development priorities.
A new book for landscape professionals and academics has been published by Routledge. Edited by landscape academics at Birmingham City University (BCU), an LI-accredited institution, the book explores the ways in which an integrated landscape vision can help deliver regional, national and international agendas.
Integrated Landscapes investigates how a new idea of landscape can reimagine governance, policy, economics, culture, identity, health, transport and development priorities by connecting in a more powerful and meaningful way with local aspirations and demands. Divided into three main sections, it includes illustrated case studies from the UK, Europe, East Asia, South Asia, and more. As part of a strategy to capture, build and disseminate expertise in this approach, the book aims to develop an interdisciplinary body of work that will appeal to academics and professionals.
Anastasia Nikologianni, who is also a member of the Landscape Institute Policy & Public Affairs Committee, said, “The idea was generated after the launch of the West Midlands National Park approach [a project grounded at BCU that was recognised by the Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Architecture Prize]. The book is based on extended research and fieldwork over the last decade and aims to explore ways in which an integrated landscape vision can help deliver regional, national and international agendas. The authors involved are experts in the field.”
The book features contributions from former Director General of the National Trust, Dame Fiona Reynolds, former Secretary of State for DEFRA, Caroline Spelman, and former President of the Landscape Institute, Merrick Denton-Thompson, as well as over 30 experts from across the discipline.
Kathryn Moore is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Birmingham City University, Director of the West Midlands National Park Lab, and past president of the International Federation of Landscape Architects and Landscape Institute.
Anastasia Nikologianni is the Director of the Young Landscape Architects and Emerging Professionals of IFLA World and a landscape architect and Research Fellow with specialization in climate crisis and regional landscape design.
Alex Albans is a research fellow at Birmingham City University where he studies the interpretation of landuse processes, and lectures in landscape architecture.
Paul Cureton is Director of Post-Graduate Research and Senior Lecturer in Design at Imagination Lancaster and a member of the Data Science Institute (DSI).
