Improving Oldhams public realm
The aim of the improvements, designed by Gillespies, is to create new public spaces and to improve the town centre environment ‘as a destination for residents, visitors, workers and businesses’.
‘The plans are all about our ambition and determination to deliver a new high-quality environment in Oldham town centre,’ says Cllr Jim McMahon, Oldham Council leader. ‘We are looking to go above and beyond the standard finish you get with a new Metrolink line and deliver something extra.’
They will, he adds, significantly improve visitors’ first impression of Oldham, by providing a range of new views and ‘a more memorable townscape’, with greener spaces and better signage.
‘Our concept designs focus on creating an exciting gateway around each of the new tram stops to maximise their potential to stimulate future regeneration in the town,’ says Warren Chapman, an associate at Gillespies’ Manchester office. Hard landscaping materials including York stone and granite-style kerbs ‘will harmonise with Oldham’s existing town centre he adds, while contrasting planting will contribute to a new green infrastructure.
Gillespies is also working for Transport for Greater Manchester to support its Metrolink expansion across Manchester City Centre, through the creation of a Concept Design Guide for Metrolink Stations and provision of urban design support.
