Vegetation management specialist Ground Control awarded £40m for UK-wide vegetation management programme
There are currently an estimated 2.5m trees growing beside the 20,000 miles of track, which, say Ground Control’s specialist arboreal services team, can cause series problems if left unchecked. For example, important signs could become hidden, or trees fall on railway lines or power cables. Network Rail has estimated that in 2013, incidents caused by vegetation cost the railway £100m and 600 trains collided with a fallen tree or large branch.
This is possibly Ground Control’s biggest single contract to date, and will continue over the next four years.
