Reading’s Green Park, one of the largest developments of its type in Europe, is a South East regional winner in the 2014 Civic Trust Awards.

Green Park Reading wins Civic Trust South East regional award

The business park in Reading will now be eligible for one of the Civic Trust national awards, which will be announced later this month.

South London-based landscape architect Place Design and Planning designed the 195-acre scheme, which it continues to develop with the park’s owner Oxford Properties and facilities management company Broadgate Estates.
‘Our original brief was to create a business park, with visual amenity and recreation opportunities where the fusion of landscape architecture and the design of the buildings provides a high quality working environment for its occupants,’ says Place managing director Tony Edwards.
The site was poor-quality agricultural land with some existing tree preservation orders and protected woodland, he explains. It was designated for employment uses and the master-planning scheme was fully supported by the three local planning authorities within which the site was situated.
The masterplan created a central lake, Longwater, which provides a strong focal point and a variety of animal and bird habitats.
A design code for the buildings at Green Park was established by Foster and Partners at the start of construction and a design panel was established, including client, architect, landscape architect and surveyor, which has reviewed all submissions and designs.
The fundamental elements of the park’s landscape include Longwater, the Foudry Brook corridor and ‘on plot landscape treatments’, are said to be essential components. The plant selection for these elements is based on conservation and bio-diversity principles, with indigenous planting supporting an increasing diversity of species.
As it has developed, and particularly since its acquisition by Oxford Properties in 2011, Green Park has made a considerable and positive contribution, says Place, ‘not only to the working lives of the 6,000 office employees and their visitors, but also to the health and enjoyment of inter-company life’.
The park hosts a number of regional sporting events, including the Green Park Triathlon.
