Green infrastructure policy success
The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) recently published a consultation paper on a new Planning Policy Statement (PPS): Planning for a Natural and Healthy Environment. The PPS will propose, for the first time, to deliver planning policy on green infrastructure, stating that it should be considered on a broader scale rather than on a case-by-case basis.
This was a key recommendation in the Landscape Institute’s position statement, ‘Green infrastructure: connected and multifunctional landscapes’, published last May. In the months since then, it has had a growing impact in policy circles, leading to meetings between LI representatives and CLG’s Urban Green Space Team plus the shadow Defra team.
Along with being cited on the Future Countryside website, which was set up by Shadow Environment Secretary Nick Herbert MP, the position statement has also been used by CABE Space as a tool in local authority enabling work.
The Landscape Institute will be responding to the Department for Communities and Local Government’s new PPS. If any members would like to give their views, they can email Stephen Russell, Policy and Public Affairs Officer, or phone on 020 7299 4537.
