Landscape practice Gillespies has prepared landscape and public realm design proposals to support 20-year plans for new phases of the BBC’s Salford HQ MediaCityUK
The proposals, which accompany the masterplan by Chapman Taylor Architects, have been submitted by developer The Peel Group. To support the new plans, which propose four new phases of expansion for MediaCityUK, Gillespies also prepared the townscape and visual impact chapter of the Environmental Impact Assessment.
This builds on Gillespies’ previous work as landscape and public realm designer of the completed Phase 1 of MediaCityUK, which spans 8.5 hectares and opened its doors last year.
In line with sustainability priorities, Gillespies’ landscape design includes water features, green roofs that enable rainwater harvesting, improved pedestrian, cycle and public transport links, and the retention of existing trees to create an strong ecology corridor.
The new plans for MediaCityUK include an additional 459,000m2 of mixed use development. This includes some 212,000m2 of new offices; 95,000m2 of residential; 26,000m2 hotels; 8,000m2 retail space, 2,500m2 leisure and 115,000m2 of car parking. This is projected to be delivered over a 20-year period in four main development phases.
