Turkish ‘oasis’ demonstrates importance of greening the city
Lotus Design Studio’s award-winning ‘green garden oasis’ for the Antalya EXPO 2016, Turkey, has become a permanent park. The 1,045m2 garden was given the innovative garden special prize for its demonstration of the importance of green living in cities.
Rain gardens, a green roof, permeable paving, and the planting of 21 new trees counter the impact of urban heat and pollution, while promoting water conservation. Aquatic planting, an insect hotel and a growing table of edible plants, encourage biodiversity. Water features and sculptures create visual interest. Indoors, air-conditioning and water cooling is powered by solar panels.
Lotus Design Studio founder Nilufer Danis said: ‘We are committed to creating beautiful spaces that have a positive impact on the environment and we believe the differences made in our green garden oasis truly enhance the space. Sustainable design and management of the natural environment is essential to protect natural resources for a healthier life for us and future generations.’
The garden was commissioned for the Expo by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and the Central Anatolian Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Association (OAIB).
