13ha Springfield Park replaces golf course as part of historic hospital redevelopment
Danish practice CF Møller Landscape is creating a new public park as part of the redevelopment of Springfield Hospital in Tooting, southwest London.
The 13 ha site, formerly a golf course, will include sports facilities and pavilions, and be characterised by a series of ecologically diverse garden rooms set among avenues of trees, gentle hills and meandering pathways.
Open lawns will be large enough to accommodate standard sports pitches and the heart of the park will be a grand lawn in front of the hospital building, with an amphitheatre for picnics and cultural events.
Particular attention will be paid to social inclusion, habitat creation, water management and functional programmes that embed the park in the local area. Swales will double up as playgrounds and attenuation ponds as garden features. Therapeutic gardens will be open to hospital patients and local residents.
The new public park will join a series of open green spaces – Wimbledon Common, Wandsworth Common, Tooting Bec – across southwest London.
The park will be developed in two phases from 2017–2023, alongside an adjacent residential development and expansion of the existing mental health hospital, for which CF Møller is also responsible. The client is South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.
