View modern visual responses to his historic landscapes
London’s Building Centre is to stage an exhibition of photographs and videos of Capability Brown landscapes, exploring how his work is seen through the eyes of leading contemporary photographers.
The exhibition, entitled ‘Lenses on a Landscape Genius’, will be open from 22 June to 29 July. It has been organised by the Landscape Foundation and jointly curated by Hal Moggridge of landscape architects Colvin & Moggridge, who has worked on restorations of several Brown landscapes, and photographer Steffie Shields, author of the forthcoming book ‘Moving Heaven & Earth, Capability Brown’s Gift of Landscape’ (Unicorn Press, June 2016).
Among more than 100 photographers taking part are: Matthew Bruce, Joe Cornish, Gareth Davies, Derek St Romaine, Jacqui Hurst, Andrea Jones, James Kerr, Gavin Kingcome, Andrew Lawson, Archie Miles, Allan Pollock-Morris, Gary Rogers, Steffie Shields, James Smith, and Stephen Studd. Also on show will be unpublished plans and drawings by Brown, and a newly commissioned bust by sculptor Jon Edgar.
The exhibition coincides with the 2016 London Festival of Architecture and is part of this year’s Capability Brown 300 festival, managed by the Landscape Institute, celebrating 300 years of since his birth.
