Camlins wins Civic Trust Award for Bristol Lakeshore development
The judges described the Lakeshore development, comprising studios and small apartments in a 10-acre site featuring a fish-stocked lake, as ‘a jewel’, adding that the landscape ‘is as striking as the building’.
Camlins’ design director Huw Morgan, who has worked on the project from its inception in 2004 stated: ‘The host building and landscape is a classic of its time. We were truly inspired by a manufactured landscape that had begun to return to nature. American spotlights of swamp cypress, mature crack willows and a surreal corten grid contrasted to provide a delightful duality’.
Camlins was selected from ‘a distinctly high quality field for its innovative and insightful view of the listed building and its landscape setting’, said James Howard, associate director at Urban Splash. It has produced, he adds ‘a creative but deliverable design solution, which is in harmony with the building’.
