Passivhaus includes rain garden and SuDS scheme
Austin Design Works (formerly David Austin & Associates) has won planning permission for a country house and landscaped garden near Milbury Heath, South Gloucestershire.
Flowing walls of the house and its gently curling and driveway are designed to echo the undulating local landscape, while the building’s impact is softened by earth mounds and an earth-sheltered garage and recreation area, covered with meadow plants and flowers.
Rain gardens and a SuDS scheme will be integrated into the landscape. There will also be an orchard, formal gardens and native hedgerows.
The five-bed house meets the ecologically stringent demands of Passivhaus design with a biomass neighbourhood heating scheme for several neighbouring dwellings and a swimming pool, and an innovative photovoltaic cloth that generates electricity while providing solar shade.
