Landscape by HED complements dramatic pavilion
A rolling woodland landscape by Hyland Edgar Driver Landscape Architects complements a bold new drawing studio on the Arts University Bournemouth campus.
The funnel-shaped blue building, by Sir Peter Cook's CRAB Studio, is the latest landmark building in an ongoing redevelopment of the campus. As natural light is essential for the artists inside the building, HED has carefully positioned surrounding trees to avoid overshadowing. Grassy areas and pathways respond to the building's sweeping curves.
A hard landscape flows around the site, tying together both the University House courtyard and the library courtyard, using granite planks to link the two spaces and carrying on through the ground floor of University House. The library courtyard uses the same granite, with integrated lighting strips, to form retaining seating walls enclosing tilted lawns used for socialising and teaching.
Elsewhere on the campus, former student accomodation is currently being remodelled as a teaching block, where HED will incorporate a courtyard on one side of the building and a signature campus entrance on the other.
