Cass Associates has won a Green Space award from Merseyside Civic Society for its work on a Liverpool regeneration scheme.

The £1.4m Stonebridge project has transformed 1.5km of the city’s A580 approach road frontage into a ribbon of high-quality boulevard along with the creation of a new community park in one of the city’s largest employment areas.

“We are delighted to have won this award for our work on what must be one of the most important regeneration projects in Liverpool,” says Cass Associates’ Kate da Cruz. “This development has provided a high-quality environment, which has had a major impact on the economic, social and ecological performance of this highly visible approach into the city.”

The complex planning, design and implementation programme has formed the framework for 32,000m2 of development in the Liverpool City Council Strategic Investment Area, as well as providing a local amenity that is now popular for walking, fishing and leisure activities.

Cass Associates had to address major water-related and ecological issues at the site. The outcome has been the creation of a beautiful green space, populated with a series of small lakes that provide a natural habitat for fish and waterfowl.

In presenting Cass Associates with the award, the Society’s Vice President Rod Holmes acknowledged that the Stonebridge project provided a landscape quality that was vital to the development as a whole. Its habitat creation, sustainable drainage and open-access features will benefit the local community.
