A competition to redesign Abbey Green in Barking, East London, has been launched by Design for London, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and The Architects’ Journal.

Abbey Green as it is now

Abbey Green is currently an under-used 6.5ha public space, bordered by the Gascoigne Estate to the south and access to the River Roding to its west. Nearby features include the Broadway Theatre on the east side of the green, the ruins of a 16th-century abbey, and two schools. Organisers says that critical to the success of entries will be understanding the green’s role in connecting the town centre with the river. The client is looking for more than just a landscape project, it is seeking a vision for a place of character.

At stage one, shortlisted entrants will be given £5,000 to develop their designs and produce a model. The winning project will become the masterplan for the park, with a paid commission to develop the vision to RIBA stage C.

The deadline for entries is 17 August 2009. Download the brief and entry form here
