Sweco acted as Lead Designer for a multi-disciplinary team with the objective of developing a series of new public spaces connecting Manchester’s Cathedral Quarter with a new 13 hectare mixed use development in Salford.

The project establishes Greengate Square as a vibrant and exciting new city centre destination. The scheme includes a new public square and an iconic footbridge over the River Irwell that connects the two cities.  The space is animated by feature light stacks and sculptural beacon towers combined with displays given by water, misting features and lasers.

Sweco engaged the client in determining clear roles and responsibilities from the outset, with resulting efficiencies and savings in the project delivery. Key challenges were overcome through regular engagement with numerous stakeholders and interested parties, including: Historic England, Network Rail, Environment Agency, Manchester Ship Canal Company and Manchester Cathedral.  We took a collaborative approach with stakeholders by hosting workshops with each group where we could share and discuss design proposals. This approach ensured that the final design respected the views of all of the key stakeholders.
