Ebrington Barracks was built in 1841 and is situated on the east bank of the River Foyle opposite the hisoric Walled City of Derry~Londonderry. Its military history dates back much further than 1841 to at least 1689 and the Jacobite assault on the City. The site has a richly layered history, which is an inherent part of its character. As a former military site, Ebrington had been closed to the public for many years, with only a few local people being able to appreciate the view back to Derry~Lononderry’s historic Walled City. Opening the site up provided a significant opportunity in Derry~Londonderry’s chronology to transform a military site that had accommodated security personnel during the ‘Troubles’ into a neutral gathering place for all. This was emphasised by the introduction of the ‘Peace Bridge’, a new cycle / pedestrian connection, linking the historic Walled City with Ebrington. The Parade Square was to become a destination space readily accessible from the centre of Derry-Londonderry.
