Indigo Landscape Architects Ltd was commissioned to design a world-class hospice providing exceptional facilities for the charity Children’s Hospice South West on the site of Charlton Farm, an area of historic parkland within Bristol’s Green Belt. The park surrounding the grade II-listed Charlton House had been allowed to decline over recent years, so proposals introduced the opportunity to restore significant historic landscape features including the parkland, orchard and farm courtyards. The completed project boasts a children’s play garden to suit all ages and is characterised by its durable design.
There were a number of special requirements including the use of environmentally sustainable design principles and the provision of wheelchair access throughout the steeply sloping topography. The diverse range of children’s abilities inspired a garden full of imaginative, physical and sensory features.
