In our first Member Pledges spotlight, we take a look at how we’ve been fulfilling those pledges around Strategy and Planning over the last 12 months.

Over the last year, as part of our New Ways of Working, we’ve been taking positive steps to become a more open, inclusive and future-orientated organisation with members at its heart. To achieve this the LI committed to eight Member Pledges to guide its immediate work. This approach has been informed by feedback we received from the member survey conducted in 2023 and Roadshow in 2022.

Here we’d like to highlight how we’ve been fulfilling those pledges around Strategy and Planning over the last 12 months. These outcomes are shaping every element of the Landscape Institute, across education, EDI, partnerships, branding, leadership, working environment, governance, operational delivery and more.

    Focusing on education

To ensure that we are Supporting your CPD, and are also Skills centered, we are committed to upskilling our members by embedding the Competency Framework into our CPD programme, helping professionals continually enhance their skills and knowledge in line with evolving industry standards.

Additionally, we have established an agreement with VetSkill, which will support the future End Point Assessment for the Level 3 Landscape Technician apprenticeship. This initiative ensures a structured pathway for new professionals entering the field, providing them with the necessary support to achieve industry-recognized qualifications.

    Leading on policy

A significant milestone in our policy work was the launch of the Landscape and Carbon report. This report highlights the essential role of landscape professionals in mitigating climate change and emphasizes the need for collaborative action to achieve sustainability goals. It sets a comprehensive agenda for advancing policy in relation to the landscape and environmental sectors, with a clear focus on carbon reduction and environmental responsibility. A steering group and three focused task and finish groups have now been set up, with updates to follow.

    Increased collaboration

Our collaborative efforts have led to significant developments, such as facilitating Historic Environment Scotland’s updated Skills Investment Plan, which aims to enhance skills and improve career prospects within the historic environment sector.

Additionally, we worked closely with organizations like Natural England, the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF), and the Forestry Commission to deliver Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing across the sector.

Another notable collaboration is with our B.E. Inclusive partners, where we have focused on promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the landscape and built environment industries, ensuring broader access and representation.

    Evolving the organisation

In the corporate sphere, we developed a new Business Plan framework in consultation with our Advisory Council. This strategic plan ensures we are Service led and provides clear direction and actionable goals for the organization, ensuring we are responsive to industry changes while fulfilling the aims of our Corporate Strategy.

We also initiated a Brand Identity review, focusing on refining our public image and ensuring that our messaging, delivered through our Proactive communications, accurately reflects our values and mission as we move forward in a rapidly changing environment.

    Devolved nations initiatives

We have been actively building partnerships and fostering engagement across the devolved nations to ensure effective delivery of our work in key areas such as policy, membership, and education. This approach, which supports our Valued membership, strengthens our ability to collaborate regionally, aligning local priorities with national initiatives, and enhancing our impact across diverse landscapes and communities.

    Increased engagement

In fulfilling our Engagement focused pledge, we made a commitment to increase visibility and impact, which is reflected in the sessions we have hosted at key external events such as Futurebuild, UKREiiF, IFLA, and Trees, People, and the Built Environment. These platforms provide opportunities for networking, thought leadership, and knowledge exchange, helping us stay at the forefront of industry trends.

In addition to event participation, we have proactively engaged with key external stakeholders involved in major projects such as the High Streets Task Force, the Construction Industry Council, and the UK Built Environment Advisory Group. This engagement ensures our influence in shaping the future of the built environment and contributing to strategic decision-making.
