As a Chartered professional body, the Landscape Institute is governed by its Royal Charter, By-laws, and Regulations.

The Council's role is to represent members and to help set the LI's strategic objectives. The Council meets three times a year and the job description for its members is here.
There are up to 30 members of the Council as follows:
Members are appointed by Council to select nominees for elected positions on Council and to make recommendations to Council on how places on the Board of Trustees which are not directly elected should best be filled.
Education & Membership Committee, Technical Committee and Policy Committee advise on and help implement the main areas of the Institute's activity. Each committee chair sits on the Board of Trustees, and each committee also has a representative on Council.
