Assistant Professor/Associate Professor Landscape Architecture

Nova Scotia AgriculturalCollege (NSAC; nsac.ca) is a small research-intensive university located in the centre of beautiful Nova Scotia at Truro-Bible Hill.   Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture and its related life and social science disciplines, NSAC educates future leaders and generates knowledge and solutions for healthy, sustainable societies.

Duties:                                                                        

Under the direction of the Department Head, Environmental Sciences, this tenure track position in Landscape Architecture is required to contribute to teaching, research and service. Teaching responsibilities include developing and delivering courses at the diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels in the areas of environmental horticulture related to landscape design graphics, planting design, and site planning, using both computerized and hand-drawing methods. The incumbent is also expected to contribute to on-going program development. Other responsibilities include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP). The incumbent is required to develop a strong self-sustaining research program with the support of industry partners that addresses the environmental horticulture needs of the region. The new faculty member is expected to establish a strong program of scholarship that contributes to the expanding knowledge of the profession and that complements existing strengths of our program. This research may be qualitative and/or quantitative in nature but must lead to peer-reviewed publications. The research program should be supportive of one’s teaching portfolio and the university’s interdisciplinary approach. Secondary responsibilities include representation of NSAC on committees, task forces, at workshops and on external bodies related to the landscape industries.

Qualifications: 

An earned Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture from a recognized university, plus one to three years teaching and/or research experience, or a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from a recognized university
, plus three to five years teaching and/or research experience.  The incumbent must have demonstrated potential to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in environmental horticulture.  Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects is required. In addition, the incumbent should have research experience in one or more of the following: sustainable sites initiative development; impacts of greenspace on human health; three-dimensional landscape planning and modeling; geographic information systems and spatial analysis; as they relate to the environmental horticulture industry. Must have a demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams; to publish original research in peer reviewed journals; to obtain competitive research grants; and to teach and effectively communicate in both verbal and written formats. Demonstrated excellence conducting research and technology transfer, the ability to supervise graduate student research and HQP training, strong leadership skills, and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in co-operation with a number of university, government, and industry groups are desirable assets. The individual must be highly motivated with sound judgement, high integrity, and strong organizational skills, and have the ability to deal effectively with students, colleagues and the general public.
