Construction Skills Certification Scheme Cards
20th August 2008
CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Cards will be available to members of the Landscape Institute from 26th August 2008.
Following a detailed and lengthy mapping exercise the Institute has now enabled its members to apply for these cards and thereby access construction sites more easily. Chartered Members and Fellows are eligible for the most senior PMR (Professional Membership Route) card while Associate members can apply for a red, trainee level card. Descriptions of all the cards can be found here.
Alex Whittaker, Head of Professional Development, explained the significance of this development:
“Having the LI and the profession of ‘Landscape Architect’ recognised by CSCS was a complicated task but it was definitely worth it. Now that this has been accomplished our members will for the first time be able to get these cards, reducing the administrative burden on both themselves and their employers.”
The application process is handled entirely by the Construction Skills organisation and Alex explained how members can receive a card:
“Members should telephone the Skills Direct service on 0844 248 5262. They can arrange your PQP health and safety test for you and pre-populate the application form with your details. When you arrive at the test centre you will need to bring a copy of your LI membership certificate and while you sit the test they will verify the details. You immediately find out if you have passed and those that do will receive their card within 7 working days. This fast-track method costs the same as organising everything yourself.”
Members can also apply online and information about all the application methods can be found on the CSCS website. The Institute recommends members apply by calling SkillsDirect as this is the fastest way to get your card. Members who have already passed the health and safety test only need to submit an application form.
CSCS was set up to help the construction industry improve quality and reduce accidents. They are increasingly demanded as proof of occupational competence by contractors, public and private clients and others. CSCS cards are recognised throughout the UK but are known as CSR (Construction Skills Register) in Northern Ireland. Once a card is received it is valid for five years.
