An opportunity to create a truly sustainable future for Wales

6th March 2008

The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) and the Design Commission for Wales are holding a meeting on 10 March.

Key stakeholders, including the Landscape Institute Wales, have been convened in a process that will create momentum in efforts to tackle climate change through changes to the built environment and to develop the agenda for action including policy and practical measures.

This meeting is part of a process that aims to engage key stakeholders to focus on the actions needed to meet the aspiration of all new building being zero carbon by 2011 and the target of 3% annual reduction in CO2 emissions from the existing housing stock.

As Peter Davies from SDC (Wales)says 'These are clearly challenging targets, but the imperative for urgent action is also clear. Our aim is to build momentum through a “can do” approach that involves leaders in the field, addresses the barriers and maximises the opportunities. We will use this first meeting to map out these issues and identify key areas for action in a route map. The process will feed into the Climate Change Commission for Wales.'
