Orientating Margate’s Old Town

30th August 2007

Margate is an architecturally fine Georgian seaside town with sandy beaches and skies, described by JMW Turner, as the “loveliest in Europe”.

Like many other seaside towns Margate has suffered from a period of decline, symbolised by the closure of Dreamland Amusement Park, but the town is now on the rise.

Against a backdrop of culturally led regeneration and the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery, Margate’s Old Town is emerging as a focal point for creativity.

Margate Renewal Partnership wishes to commission a work that reveals the hidden gem of the Old Town to a wider audience. They would like to see something imaginative and artistic; an idea that subtly transforms the Old Town without losing its character.

Expressions of interests are invited from artists, designers, and other creative practitioners working individually or collaboratively.

A project brief is available from Margate Renewal Partnership.
