National House Building Council Launches Standards on Green Roofs

15th June 2007

Following success in Europe, particularly in Germany and Scandinavian countries, builders and developers in the UK are increasingly opting for green roofs. These can bring attractive plant life into urban areas, improve biodiversity, help reduce the risk of flooding by attenuating rainfall and even help improve thermal efficiency in homes.

The new Standards, launched by the NHBC, which are effective from 1 September, give detailed guidance on the different types of flat roofs and where they are most appropriate for use.

Peter Crane, NHBC's Head of Standards, said: "NHBC is supporting the rapidly emerging environmental and sustainability agendas with this new guidance. As increasing numbers of builders and developers opt for green roofs in the drive to fulfill environmental objectives it is vital that they have the necessary guidance to ensure that roofs are designed and constructed to last for the benefit of consumers."
