Society of Garden Designers Appoints New Chairman

11th June 2007

The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has appointed Peter Thomas as its new chairman. As part of this role, Thomas will be responsible for further growing the Society’s 1500-strong membership. He will also be tasked with promoting excellence in garden design as chair of the UK’s only professional body devoted solely to this growing sector.

Originally from Australia, Thomas has been based in the UK for over 20 years and runs a garden design business from his offices in Hertfordshire. As well as contributing to leading books on landscape construction, Thomas is an authority on Computer Aided Design as well as the use of water in garden design, and in particular natural swimming ponds. He holds an honours degree in landscape and garden design from Writtle College and has exhibited at both the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the BBC Gardeners World Show.

Peter Thomas has been a member of the Society of Garden Designers since 2002. In the same year he became regional co-ordinator for the Society’s membership in London and the East Anglia region and took over the national co-ordinators role in 2003.

The Society of Garden Designers

The Society of Garden Designers was established in 1981 and is the only professional body in the UK dedicated solely to garden design. It is active both nationally and internationally, promoting its aims through its journal, workshops, seminars, conferences and links with the construction industry. All its members are governed by the Society Constitution and Code of Conduct. Its membership includes leading lights in the garden design world such as John Brookes, Sarah Eberle, Christopher Bradley-Hole, Arabella Lennox-Boyd, Dan Pearson, Julie Toll, Andy Sturgeon and Cleve West.
