AWARD FOR LANDSCAPE - THE INSTITUTE'S JOURNAL

26th April 2007

The Landscape Institute's monthly Journal, Landscape, has won a CiB Award of Excellence for the cover of the October 2006 issue.

The cover featured original artwork by Christopher Wormell, depicting a rural scene in East Anglia, for a special edition covering landscape architecture in the region.

The award, for best use of illustration, was made by the British Association of Communicators in Business.

Artist Christopher Wormell cut three separate lino blocks which were inked and overprinted to create the finished artwork.
He also hand tooled the 'Landscape' masthead which was then combined with the image in Photoshop to create the finished cover.

The judges said: 'There has been a sort of minimalist approach to this illustration on the magazine front cover. Minimalist and impressionist, because there is an impression of the coastal vegetation found in East Anglia, there is the remains of a windmill, and the suggestion of farmhands working the land.
'There are rolling clouds in a big, big sky.

The intention was to find an illustration which conveyed the sense of East Anglia, and perhaps the Norfolk coast. I think the creators have achieved their goal because the only other place that this might be confused with is Holland and there are so many similarities between the two landscapes that such confusion would be quite forgivable. What the authors have also managed is to create a real retro feel to this image. The style and colour does take you back to the British Railway posters of the late 40s and early 50s when BR was encouraging us all to get was from it all by train. I really like this illustration for its simplicity. Excellent.'

Landscape Art Director Joe Gardiner says: 'I'm delighted that Landscape has received this recognition. I took the decision to feature illustration on the cover as a means of creating bespoke images that convey a sense of the contents of the whole issue, rather than just one feature. By leaving off cover lines we also give the illustrator greater freedom to create a stronger image, which results in a bolder cover. We've continued to champion illustration with the redesigned Landscape and with each issue the covers continue to get stronger.'
