Pennington Road Footbridge Shortlist Announced
6th February 2007
88 entries were received for the opportunity to design a new footbridge across the Leeds-Liverpool canal in the Bootle area of Liverpool.
Six schemes have now been shortlisted and the authors of those schemes invited to an interview to discuss their concept with the jury panel.
The shortlisted entries are:
Youssef Ghali, Egypt
Hakes Associates Architects, London
B & C Associati, Italy
Chris Curtis & Elliott Wood, London
Arca, Manchester
Softroom, London
Renato Benedetti, RIBA adviser said: “We were delighted with the energetic response to the competition. The 88 entries showed a wide variety of approaches and solutions and the shortlist is interestingly diverse. We are looking forward to meeting the six shortlisted architects for the interview stage and selecting a winner.”
Lee Payne, programme co-ordinator, Housing Market Renewal, Sefton Council commented: "The interest in the competition has been amazing and really shows that the regeneration of south Sefton has captured the imagination. The improvement of the Leeds to Liverpool canal corridor is a major project that will transform a run-down area. Choosing between 88 designs was very difficult and is a testament to the hard work put in by those who submitted entries. I'm confident that we have a short list of iconic bridges and look forward to taking the winning design through the construction phase and delivering this exciting scheme."
These practices will now attend an interview on 8 February to be held at Bootle Town Hall, Merseyside.
