Design Team Chosen to put Heart back into Pool

10th January 2007

Landscape architecture firm, Land Use Consultants, will design the new park at the heart of a major new regeneration area in Pool, Cornwall.

Last year, Kerrier District Council, CPR Urban Regeneration Company and national regeneration agency, English Partnerships launched a competition with the Landscape Institute to select design team to work with local people on the creation of Heartlands Park beside a former tin and copper mine. The park will also become a gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site close to Camborne, Pool and Redruth.

Over 70 companies expressed an interest in the project and in December the judging panel, comprising Kerrier District Council, English Partnerships, CPR Regeneration and other specialist advisors, shortlisted six organisations to consider for the final decision. Members of the local community were also invited to appraise the designs as part of the judging process.

“We’re delighted to have this opportunity,” said Adrian Wikeley, principal at Land Use Consultants. “Our proposals aimed to combine the rich heritage of the site with modern thinking and technologies to attract visitors of all ages and backgrounds.”

The Heartlands Park is a key component of West Cornwall’s Living Landmarks lottery bid, which will be submitted for consideration in May this year.

“Pool, Redruth and Camborne need a project on this scale to attract business and start the regeneration process,” said Malcolm Moyle, councillor for Kerrier District Council. “There is a strong sense of community that has helped local people to face up to a number of issues, including the decline in core industries, and it’s that spirit that will help the park to succeed and put the heart back into the area.”

Ideas from Land Use Consultants include a landmark illuminated tower; a unique garden commemorating the Cornish Migration, a creative and locally inspired play space; and onsite energy generation to make it the first ‘Zero Energy Park’.

“The proposals from the shortlisted companies were of exceptional quality and, after careful consideration, we chose the design team that we believe will work most effectively with the community and key partners to deliver an inspirational park here in Pool,” said one of the judges, Steve Jackson, senior regeneration manager for English Partnerships.

“This project will contribute to the wider social and economic regeneration of the area by providing safe, appealing green spaces for local people and visitors to enjoy as well as creating a wonderful setting for the new homes and offices that will overlook the parkland.”

Land Use Consultants will work with Kerrier District Council, English Partnerships and other partners to put together the final stage bid for Lottery funding.

The judges included represtatives from Kerrier District Council, Cornwall County Council, English Partnerships, CPR Urban Regeneration and landscape architect, Terry Anderson MLI.
