Stage one asked architects and landscape architects to come up with ideas for the development of new public sports facilities and the reinvigoration of Central Park in Scunthorpe, north Lincolnshire. The park has an approximate area of 27 hectares and comprises ancient woodland, formal public park, and sports facilities. The promoters’ vision is to encourage participation in active recreation, and an increased demand for the park and its sports and leisure offerings through the provision of a new range of quality facilities.
The competition is being organised by the RIBA Competitions Office and the Landscape Institute on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council in partnership with Yorkshire Forward as part of its renaissance agenda for Scunthorpe. Shortlisted teams will now be asked to work up their ideas further over the next two months. Final judging will take place in late September following a public consultation exercise.
Barra Mac Ruairi, Head of Renaissance Towns and Cities for Yorkshire Forward said: "We are delighted that this competition has attracted interest from 45 different sources at the first stage. We are confident that the final scheme will deliver what is needed to develop public sports facilities at Scunthorpe’s Central Park, and look forward to seeing the more detailed designs from the six shortlisted teams."
Tony Lyman, Head of Planning and Regeneration for North Lincolnshire Council said: "The standard of the 45 submissions was very high and created a lot of public interest. The judging panel had a difficult task shortlisting the final six entries. We eagerly look forward to receiving he detailed submissions in September."
