Chelsea Flower Show 2006

Campania Region, Italy: The Costiera dei Fiori Garden

The coastline of the Italian region of Campania is as rich in history and culture as it is in breathtaking scenery. From Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples southwards around the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi coast to Paestum, this 'coast of flowers' is one of the world's most memorable and inspirational landscapes.

The Costiera dei Fiori garden for the Chelsea Flower Show focuses on three elements that characterize the landscape and way of life on this southern Italian coast:

The natural Macchia mediterranea with the wild flowers, trees and shrubs that grow on the dry, rocky limestone and volcanic soils;

The terraced fruit and vegtable gardens made here by the local people, including lemon groves enclosed within a protective structure of chestnut poles, and peas grown over bundles of vine clippings in the traditional way;

The decorated terrace, with hand-painted tiled seats and pots and unique paving with planted joints, and colourful ornamental plants - that are all so quintessentially Mediterranean. Urns at the front of the terrace will display cut flowers grown in the region.
