Public Forest Estate consultation

The Forestry Commission is asking for views on the future role of England's publicly owned woods and forests.

The Public Forest Estate covers 258,000ha, or 2 per cent of England’s land surface, making it the single largest land holding in England. A public consultation document, ‘The Long-term Role of the Forestry Commission Public Forest Estate in England’, has been published to allow the public and practitioners to give their opinions on how the Estate can meet 21st century challenges such as climate change, increased development and the move to a low carbon economy.

The public consultation is part of the Study of the Public Forest Estate, which was announced in November 2008 by the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn to develop a first-ever mandate for the Estate’s future.

There are also a series of regional meetings to encourage discussion on the issues raised by the consultation and to give people the opportunity to meet some of the Study project team.
