Maidstone High Street shortlist unveiled

Townshend Landscape Architects and Terence O'Rourke Ltd and are among the five firms that have been shortlisted for the Maidstone High Street Open Design Competition.

The £4m public realm improvement project, organised by Maidstone Borough Council and RIBA, attracted 76 submissions from as far afield as Germany, Bulgaria and the United States.

The two landscape practices were chosen, alongside Conran & Partner Ltd, Douglas and King Architects and Letts Wheeler Architects, by a panel comprising a head of college from the University for the Creative Arts, elected and executive members of Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council and architect Robert Sakula.

Councillor Malcolm Greer, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Maidstone Borough Council, commented: “We were delighted that so many designers were interested in the project to reinvigorate the High Street and rebalance the competing needs of pedestrians, vehicles and traffic. We had a fantastic response – the overall quality of the submissions was very high and there were some stunning design proposals.”

Design proposals by the five shortlisted teams have been on public display in Maidstone for the past few weeks. The comments will be collated to help inform the jury panel’s decision when it reconvenes to hear the teams present their design proposals later this week.
