The Grasslands Trust is the latest public body to join the Eco-town coalition.
The announcement comes as the coalition issued a joint response to the recent consultation on the draft Planning Policy Statement (PPS) on Eco-towns.
Lucy Cooper, chief executive of The Grasslands Trust, is delighted that the Trust has joined the coalition. She said: “Eco-towns need to show their eco-credentials through their green spaces. High-quality green spaces provide places for people to relax and play, and homes for wildlife. We need eco-towns to show how essential these spaces are to the fabric of urban areas and how important they are in the lives of the people who live there.”
The coalition is a cross-sector campaigning group that comprises organisations dedicated to the environment and social justice, such as Shelter, the TUC, Landscape Institute, Sustrans, the Town and Country Planning Association and many more.
It was set up in September 2008 with the publication of a joint statement offering a broad message of support for the eco-town concept. In it, the organisations pledge to support eco-towns on sites that will “allow them to reach the highest environmental standards, coupled with a real, long-term commitment to social and affordable housing and innovation and excellence in design that will serve as an example both in the UK and abroad”.
