Crossrail design gets on track

Crossrail has awarded its first contracts for the detailed design of its planned infrastructure

The scheme will see the construction of 118km of railway from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through 21km tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. It will increase London’s public transport capacity by 10 per cent and will bring an additional 1.5 million people within 60 minutes of central London.

Under the Crossrail Design Framework Agreements announced in December, 12 firms have the opportunity to compete for packages of detailed design work and the first contracts were awarded for projects ranging from the design of bored tunnels to Tottenham Court Road station.

Companies awarded these early contracts included Capita Symonds Ltd, Mott MacDonald and Ove Arup & Partners International Ltd.

Dr Graham Plant, Programme Director at Crossrail, said: "These first design packages give the Crossrail project further impetus following the commencement of construction at Canary Wharf earlier this month. The awards mark the start of the project's detailed design stage and we look forward to working closely with all the successful companies in driving forward the design as we move towards the start of main construction works in 2010."
