Contractor sought for Brent Civic Centre

£60 million project to be completed by 2012.

Hopkins Architects has revealed its plans for the new Brent Civic Centre next to Wembley Stadium, north London.

The practice beat a number of other firms, including Ken Shuttleworth’s Make, to land the £60 million project, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.

The scheme will eventually house 2,000 Brent Council staff, as well as a ‘flexible’ community for up to 1,000 people, a new library and learning centre, a winter garden and a smaller Civic Hall.

There are also plans for a multi-purpose foyer with “grand civic steps”, an external terrace, café and a larger Registrars Service facility with a wedding suite and wedding garden.

Bill Taylor, managing director of Hopkins, said: “This is a major new London project for us – a terrific opportunity to bring together administrative and civic functions in a new world-class building.”

Recently, the local council launched a search for a contractor to build the “landmark”, which it sees as a catalyst to “help transform the way the council delivers services throughout Brent”.

Aktar Choudhury, Civic Centre programme director at Brent Council, said: “[This scheme] will form an important part of one of UK’s most exciting regeneration projects in a prominent setting opposite Wembley Stadium.

“We are seeking to create a community centrepiece in the heart of a modern development, and determined to build the UK’s greenest building.”
