BRE Innovation Park landscape unveiled

The integral part landscape plays in a sustainable approach was demonstrated at BRE Innovation Park, last week.

Landscape architect Peter Wilder launched the LI’s new publication on green infrastructure at the Insite 09 Conference held last week at the Buildings Research Establishment. He said: "The impact of the landscape on the Innovation Park is that it sends a clear message to those who formulate policy on building construction, including the BRE, that landscape is an integral part of a sustainable approach. It is the glue that binds high performance buildings into a more naturally integrated context which allows people to reconnect with nature and appreciate the value of a low impact lifestyle."

The award-winning landscape for the BRE Innovation Park was revealed at Insite 09. Designed by PRP Landscape following a competition run by the Landscape Institute, the winning design works with the existing park to create a joined up ‘sustainable community’.

Key features of the scheme are:

  • A ‘streetscape’ that creates a seamless journey through the Park
  • A pedestrian-friendly Homezone
  • A central open space ‘plaza‘
  • A ‘green gym’ community garden
  • Imaginative play space for children
  • Porous paving to provide sustainable urban drainage
  • Geothermal paving
  • Green facades/walls/nesting/habitats
  • A swale
