Conran and Partners uses ‘green ribbon’ to tie together 1km site
Conran and Partners have completed the 20ha Futako Tamagawa regeneration project in Tokyo: 400,000m² of retail, office, leisure and residential building, as well as a new city park.
The 1km-long site runs along the Tama River, on the south-west edge of the city, and sits on a new landscaped plateau. It is united along its length by a meandering green route or 'green ribbon' connecting Futako-tamagawa-eki station at the western end to the new Futakotamagawa Park at the eastern.
As one moves from the station to the park, buildings become progressively lighter in colour and more delicately detailed, responding to the transition from urban to pastoral. Exposed stone strata in the landscape are echoed in the stepped forms of the low-rise buildings.
The project is the first in Japan to achieve LEED ND Gold Standard (Pre-Certified Plan) – equivalent to the UK BREEAM 'Excellent'. The local landscape team was Landscape Plus Inc.
